Top 5 Singles of 48G in 2014

Okay, so I’ve been thinking about doing some music reviews. Since this year I’ve been listening to the 48G (48 Group, this means it includes all sister groups, AKB48, SKE48, NMB48, JKT48, HKT48) all years, I think it’d be nice if I write about their top 5 singles this year. So, the criteria for how good the music is would be from the musical quality, the Promotional Video (PV), and the story behind the song. And that is what makes idoling special: the story behind the song does matter ! Okay, so, here goes the list !

5. B Garden by AKB48 Team B

Center: Watanabe Mayu

A coupling song to AKB48’s 36th Single, Labrador Retriever. The song is about the newly-formed Kuramochi’s Team B. It introduces the members of the new Team B. At first, it tells about how Team B is like a big garden with various flowers in it. Then, it introduces the unique characteristics or stories important to each flowers which are of course the members of the Team B. Like when they’re introducing the newest member of the 48G and the Team B, Ikoma Rina “come from a far land as an exchange student, Ikotan” referring to her transfer as a member of Nogizaka46, or “Naanyan, I want to be an idol, but the next thing I knew, I am a zombie” referring to her role in the J-Drama Sailor Zombie. The tone of the music itself is happy, and sounds festive, really draws on the flower garden concept wrapped up in a funny PV which sees the Team-B manager covering Ikoma Rina’s part as she came late to the set. Definitely a Team B special.

4. Ambulance by 48G’s Yurigumi

「Ambulance」 (ゆり組).mp4_snapshot_03.12_[2014.12.13_23.37.11]

Center: Sato Sumire

Coupling song to their latest single, Kibouteki Refrain. It tells about the ‘sick’ (in a good way) feeling when you fall in love, and you are in desperate need of a love doctor. Well, they’re taking it to a more advanced state of emergency, in need of a love ambulance. This is a very naughty song indeed, as the member are wearing an extremely arousing costumes. Oh, and the members participating in the Yurigumi (Lily-group, lily is a flower that symbolize sexual something in Japanese culture) are those who I think Aki-P sees have these strong sexual attraction: Yagura Fuuko, Furuhata Nao, Matsuoka Natsumi, and of course THE Nagao Mariya. And oh, the PV is, oh wow, there’s a very intimate kissing scene in it.

3. Bukiyou Taiyou by SKE48’s Senbatsu

[Engsub] Bukiyou Taiyou - SKE48.mkv_snapshot_02.36_[2014.12.13_23.46.41]

Center: Matsui Jurina

SKE48’s 15th single. Great song about a girl who gets awkward when near her love target. If only the song have more background on it, it’d be on a more respective position in this list, since the music itself is THE BEST on this list. I don’t know, but it reminds me of the good old J-Pop songs. The ones in the early 90s. The slow paced, but suddenly have a quick knack in the middle. It is very easy to fall in love with this song. The PV itself is standard SKE48, beautiful girls are everywhere, but that’s it, it doesn’t really have a ‘soul’. Rena looks really good on the Yukata though.

2. Hikaeme I Love You by HKT48’s Senbatsu

HKT48 - Hikaeme I love you PV.ts_snapshot_00.24_[2014.11.05_00.01.55]

Center: Kodama Haruka

HKT48’s 4th single. HKT48’s second single that senbatsu’s features the future of the group: Yabuki Nako and Tanaka Miku. The song is about the lovelife of a young girl, typical HKT48. The story behind the song is that this song marks the return of Kodama Haruka for HKT48 center after her position got taken over by Miyawaki Sakura. I really love the PV. It’s spurts out happiness, and the members combination are just perfect. The main 3 of HKT48: Sasshi, Sakuratan, paired with the center, Kodama Haruka. While the cuties: Nako, Miku, and Meru are together, and of course the Natsumi, Madoka, and the newly transferred Kimoto Kanon trio which symbolize “teen age”, are giving different vibes from each scenes.

1. Kibouteki Refrain by AKB48’s (special) Senbatsu

Center: Miyawaki Sakura and Watanabe Mayu

AKB48’s 38th Single. The song is great, but what makes it very-very special is the appearences of the AKB48 Legends who have graduated: Mariko Shinoda, Oshima Yuko, Itano Tomomi, and the one and only Maeda Atsuko on the PV. The PV itself tells the story of the AKB48 groups post-Yuko Oshima era. The main point of the PV is the members are bringing and protecting a bag from a bunch of mysterious men that is thrown into each other, it’s like passing the baton in an estafet run. This is an expression of ‘passing the next responsibility’ that is well used in Japanese literature. At first, it was Takahashi Minami who brought the bag, it symbolize how she ‘builds’ AKB48 from an unknown underground idol, as she is one of the very first member of the group. Then she passed it into Atsuko Maeda, the first big bang of the AKB48. Then, Atsuko Maeda throw it into SKE48’s Matsui Jurina, marking her explosive appearance on Oogoe Diamond. Jurina then passed it into AKB48’s new comer ace, Shimazaki Haruka, who just marked her career as a center in Eien Pressure. Shimazaki Haruka then ‘lifted’ by Mariko Shinoda, and also joined by Watanabe Mayu, Tomomi Itano, and Oshima Yuko whom mixed the bag, confusing the chaser. This marks the AKB48 post-Maeda Atsuko era, in which the aces of AKB48 are together making their name bigger and bigger. When the bag is finally thrown into Mayuyu, it draws a story in which Mayuyu was thought to be the next center, in the time of crisis, but they’re wrong, it was HKT48’s Sashihara Rino who took the bag. This one is my favorite scene, as Sashihara came out from a dark alley, symbolizing her scandalous career. Then she passed it to Kojima Haruna, the only ace from the first generation that are still a big part of AKB48 (IMHO, Takamina is not an ace, she is never an ace, she is simply bigger than that). In the end, Kojima Haruna passed it to Mayuyu who opens the bag together with the future center of AKB48: Miyawaki Sakura. Finally, they come into the stage along with AKB48’s current and future aces: Miyazawa Sae, Ikoma Rina, Tano Yuka, Oshima Ryoka, Mutou Tomu, Kojima Mako, Kizaki Yuria, Owada Nana, etc. This PV marks the milestone of AKB48 journey. That is why it deserves the top spot on this list.
